Philipsburg, St. Maarten: New Developments on the Way

Pointe Blanche, St. Maarten: Yet another major resort project is in the making and has been in the initial planning stages since 2003. This one is planned for the area adjacent to the Cruise Port Facility in Pointe Blanche and is the Ocean View Resort.

The planned Ocean View Resort is still pending the final review process and all the appropriate Government approvals but principals of the project are expressing confidence that Government will move this process along as quickly as possible.

The $342 million development will consist of a 250 room resort, two condominium towers with 174 units, a convention center, a performing arts center and a marina with 24 townhouse condos. The marina will have 114 slips and be able to accommodate 400 foot yachts and two 900 foot vessels. Wow. Now that’s a marina.

The project principals are extremely comfortable in making this very sizeable investment in the future of St. Maarten and all their financing sources are of the same mindset. Their intention is to complement what St. Maarten already represents to the world and that is being “The Riviera of the Caribbean”. Never heard us referred to in that way but we really are. Have to use that description more often.

Now all this is well and good as the project will generate approximately 300-400 new jobs and that’s a lot for an island of our size but it still begs the two old and nagging questions. Will our infrastructure be up to handling all the additional weight and that means, in particular, power and traffic. Let’s hope so as the massive expansions in new resorts and condominium complexes can shortly be expected to tax these areas in serious fashion.
